Great narrowed green eyes stalked the desert jack rabbit with such intensity it was surprising how the scraggy brown creature did not have a hole burning in it’s fur. Although obviously not unaware that he she was being stalked as her ears swivelled and occasionally she would peer over the sparse undergrowth in hopes of catching a glimpse of her admirer. He stalked closer, lower to the ground until he was only a leap and a bound away from her and he could almost feel her quick heartbeat against his paws. Suddenly to his left a startled lizard hurried itself under a rock but this slight sound was enough to set the rabbit on full alert, thumping its hind legs before bounding off as fast as any cheetah. With a low growl he gave chase though he was no match for the speed and fear that the little herbivore possessed and he felt himself slowing. He softened his pace and stared on in disbelief. To his luck, a bird startled by his appearance took flight and in desperation he pounced, displaying some of the caracal’s well-known bird hunting skills while twisting in the air with one paw firmly on his catch. It was pure chance but he aced it and the struggling bird was soon but to sleep.
Had this been and more difficult and energy consuming then he would have given up and returned to hunting lizards and land-dwelling small prey but unknown to the his crowd (mostly vultures) he had a mouth to feed. A pretty damn big one at that! He didn’t even know what the hell she was, all he knew that she was huge and couldn’t hunt in the heat or by herself too well just yet. He didn’t even know why he so readily accepted her into his territory when it was obvious she didn’t belong here but those eyes so similar to his had melted him… for the first five minutes. As a cub she demanded to be fed every five minutes, she moaned when she was hungry or bored or both. Her optimism when he was just not in the mood was enough to tempt him to give a crocodile a big hug but somehow he hadn’t thrown the little bugger out and even now he was hunting to give her a decent meal but it was never nearly enough to satisfy her hunger. Lifting his catch in his jaws he eyed the plains suspiciously as he carried his prey back to his den about a mile away where he would be greeted by loud purrs and fuzzy kisses. This made his head hurt.
It didn’t take long before the sandy red feline found his den. It was nothing but an extended meerkat burrow underneath an old tree that smelled strongly of him and sweat. Anastacia was not in sight but the food was surely enough to bring her out. He dropped the bird near the entrance and poked his nose in the opening which had been largely extended to allow his over-sized cub space. Soon enough she would have to stay outdoors but thankfully she had a thick enough coat to withstand the freezing savannah nights. “This place stinks! Did you poop again? Seriously, gross. Get your food.” He meowed with a hint of annoyance. He knew she wouldn’t have pooped in the den at this age - if anything, he was trying to get a quick response and her reactions always amused him but the den did need cleaning out at some point. Two cats to one burrow was not nearly hygienic.
