Zazi
The small female had spent most of the spring living beside a large waterhole. Blackbuck, Chinkara, and Nilgai all flocked to it in order to quench their thirst and feed on the tender green shoots that grew in such abundance during the spring. Their presence on its shores was so regular that Zazi was able to establish a daily routine for much of the fertile season. Her routine had been to pick one of the foolish things off, eat as much of it as she possibly could, and rest in the shade of a nearby Umbrella Thorn Acacia until she felt hunger pangs again. It was a routine that she had actually grown fat off of. The extra pounds had only pushed up her up into the average weight range for her species, but it still made her feel slower and less graceful than she should be.
The sun was just beginning to pull itself above the eastern end of the horizon, its rays slowly but surely bleaching the inky night sky to blue and orange. The various bird species that called the savanna home were twittering back and forth as they fed and tended to their offspring. The antelope were already grazing, hoping to get themselves full before the predators were up so that they would not be hungry when they were forced to flee. Many were making a hasty run to nearby waterholes. Best to get a few mouthfuls of the muddy water down before even more of it evaporated in the hot noon sun.
The spotted feline was crouched among the blades of tall grasses, keeping herself as still as possible. To brush against one of them might create a crackling or rustling that would alert her next meal to her presence. She took a quiet breath, letting the scent of the Blackbuck herd before her. It was a small herd of only five individuals: one male displaying the typical black and white coloration, two fawn and white females, and two young fawns. One was of the same coloring as its mother, while the other was pure white, a rare albino.
Zazi narrowed her eyes, taking her attention away from his older kin and focusing all of it on him. The albino had strayed several feet away from his dam's sphere of protection. He was gazing up at a low-flying bird, his back to her. Salmon pink lingua swiped over cream-colored lips as she tensed her muscles, preparing to run. Her next meal was a little less than thirty three feet away from her position. The hunt would be quick and easy.
She could've sworn that she'd heard the sounds of another animal nearby just as she left the cover....
