The male snow leopard stood on the edge of one of the many winding paths along the mountain’s side; sharp, icy wind whipping across and down the mountain peaks, ruffling his fur and sending a slight shiver down his spine. A wide grin crept to his mouth. He was happy to here, happy to be in the open and have the wind in his face. He growled, not out of anger or hatred, but of excitement and a flutter of longing in his chest. Digging his claws into the snow beneath his paws, he turned around and bounded down the path closer to the middle of the mountain.
He was looking for someone, a friend, foe or prey, he wasn’t sure, but he needed to be around someone. He wanted to feel young and play around with other cats. He never had any siblings and had to grow up in a zoo were the only other cats around were two old cougar females and a moody lion with a scar across his nose. He grew up alone and had to endure hot summers and winters that never got cold enough. He sighed, never again he have to put up with humans, cages and things being thrown at him day in and day out.
He skidded to a halt, and took in deep breathes. He looked around, and still saw no one. Scenting the air he picked up the allure of a snowshoe hare not far away, digging though the snow to find something to nibble on. He dropped to the ground slowly and picked his way to his prey, being sure to be absolutely silent. When he was less than a few feet away from the hare, his stomach growled. The hare stood up, fear in its eyes and took off as fast as it could towards safety. He lunged forward, trying to grab the hare before it ran away, but missed my just a few inches. He growled and threw his claws across the side of the mountain, leaving marks in the rocks. He looked up to the sky; it looked as if it was going to snow again. “Great, just what I want.”
